## 2. Technical Overview <a id="chapter-002"></a>
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
Open Ethereum's goal is to be the fastest, lightest, and most secure Ethereum client. We are developing Open Ethereum using the sophisticated and cutting-edge **Rust programming language** . Open Ethereum is licensed under the GPLv3 and can be used for all your Ethereum needs.
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
By default, Open Ethereum runs a JSON-RPC HTTP server on port `:8545` and a Web-Sockets server on port `:8546` . This is fully configurable and supports a number of APIs.
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
If you run into problems while using Open Ethereum, check out the [old wiki for documentation ](https://wiki.parity.io/ ), feel free to [file an issue in this repository ](https://github.com/OpenEthereum/open-ethereum/issues/new ), or hop on our [Discord ](https://discord.gg/FJUgGe ) chat room to ask a question. We are glad to help! **For security-critical issues** , please refer to the security policy outlined in [SECURITY.md ](SECURITY.md ).

## 3. Building <a id="chapter-003"></a>
### 3.1 Build Dependencies <a id="chapter-0031"></a>
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
Open Ethereum requires **latest stable Rust version** to build.
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
2018-08-27 17:01:56 +02:00
We recommend installing Rust through [rustup ](https://www.rustup.rs/ ). If you don't already have `rustup` , you can install it like this:
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
- Linux:
```bash
$ curl https://sh.rustup.rs -sSf | sh
```
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
Open Ethereum also requires `clang` (>= 9.0), `clang++` , `pkg-config` , `file` , `make` , and `cmake` packages to be installed.
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
- OSX:
```bash
$ curl https://sh.rustup.rs -sSf | sh
```
`clang` is required. It comes with Xcode command line tools or can be installed with homebrew.
2019-07-12 14:15:30 +02:00
- Windows:
2018-08-27 17:01:56 +02:00
Make sure you have Visual Studio 2015 with C++ support installed. Next, download and run the `rustup` installer from
https://static.rust-lang.org/rustup/dist/x86_64-pc-windows-msvc/rustup-init.exe, start "VS2015 x64 Native Tools Command Prompt", and use the following command to install and set up the `msvc` toolchain:
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
```bash
$ rustup default stable-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc
```
2018-08-27 17:01:56 +02:00
Once you have `rustup` installed, then you need to install:
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
* [Perl ](https://www.perl.org )
* [Yasm ](https://yasm.tortall.net )
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
Make sure that these binaries are in your `PATH` . After that, you should be able to build Open Ethereum from source.
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
2019-06-25 08:15:13 +02:00
### 3.2 Build from Source Code <a id="chapter-0032"></a>
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
```bash
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
# download Open Ethereum code
2020-03-01 23:40:59 +01:00
$ git clone https://github.com/OpenEthereum/open-ethereum
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
$ cd open-ethereum
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
# build in release mode
$ cargo build --release --features final
```
2018-08-27 17:01:56 +02:00
This produces an executable in the `./target/release` subdirectory.
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
Note: if cargo fails to parse manifest try:
```bash
$ ~/.cargo/bin/cargo build --release
```
Note, when compiling a crate and you receive errors, it's in most cases your outdated version of Rust, or some of your crates have to be recompiled. Cleaning the repository will most likely solve the issue if you are on the latest stable version of Rust, try:
```bash
$ cargo clean
```
2020-02-07 12:37:05 +01:00
This always compiles the latest nightly builds. If you want to build stable, do a
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
```bash
$ git checkout stable
```
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
### 3.3 Starting Open Ethereum <a id="chapter-0034"></a>
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
2019-06-25 08:15:13 +02:00
#### Manually
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
To start Open Ethereum manually, just run
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
```bash
$ ./target/release/parity
```
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
so Open Ethereum begins syncing the Ethereum blockchain.
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
2019-06-25 08:15:13 +02:00
#### Using `systemd` service file
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
To start Open Ethereum as a regular user using `systemd` init:
2018-08-21 16:49:24 +02:00
1. Copy `./scripts/parity.service` to your
2018-08-27 17:01:56 +02:00
`systemd` user directory (usually `~/.config/systemd/user` ).
2019-02-07 12:50:15 +01:00
2. Copy release to bin folder, write `sudo install ./target/release/parity /usr/bin/parity`
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
3. To configure Open Ethereum, write a `/etc/parity/config.toml` config file, see [our old wiki ](https://paritytech.github.io/wiki/Configuring-Parity ) for details.
2018-08-27 17:01:56 +02:00
2019-07-03 17:44:58 +02:00
## 4. Testing <a id="chapter-004"></a>
2019-10-23 14:20:47 +02:00
Download the required test files: `git submodule update --init --recursive` . You can run tests with the following commands:
2019-07-03 17:44:58 +02:00
* **All** packages
```
cargo test --all
```
* Specific package
```
cargo test --package < spec >
```
Replace `<spec>` with one of the packages from the [package list ](#package-list ) (e.g. `cargo test --package evmbin` ).
You can show your logs in the test output by passing `--nocapture` (i.e. `cargo test --package evmbin -- --nocapture` )

### Viewing documentation for Open Ethereum packages
2019-06-25 08:15:13 +02:00
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
You can generate documentation for Open Ethereum Rust packages that automatically opens in your web browser using [rustdoc with Cargo ](https://doc.rust-lang.org/rustdoc/what-is-rustdoc.html#using-rustdoc-with-cargo ) (of the The Rustdoc Book), by running the the following commands:
2019-06-25 08:15:13 +02:00
* **All** packages
```
2019-07-03 17:44:58 +02:00
cargo doc --document-private-items --open
2019-06-25 08:15:13 +02:00
```
* Specific package
```
2019-07-03 17:44:58 +02:00
cargo doc --package < spec > -- --document-private-items --open
2019-06-25 08:15:13 +02:00
```
2019-07-03 17:44:58 +02:00
Use`--document-private-items` to also view private documentation and `--no-deps` to exclude building documentation for dependencies.
2020-03-09 15:07:15 +01:00
Replacing `<spec>` with one of the following from the details section below (i.e. `cargo doc --package open-ethereum --open` ):
